New guidance published to help elected councillors

Date: Mon, 21 May 2007 12:31

New guidance to help elected councillors understand their obligations under the Data Protection Act has published by the Information Commissioner’s Office.

The guidance outlines the key points of the Act which members must consider before using residents’ personal information, such as notifying with the ICO and ensuring personal information is stored securely.

Before using residents’ personal information for any particular purpose, elected members should take into account the context in which that information was collected. This will help to determine whether their use of the information is fair and lawful.

“This guidance will inform newly elected councillors and remind re-elected councillors about their obligations under the Data Protection Act. Complying with the Act is a legal requirement but also makes good sense for councillors.

It is important that elected members have the trust and confidence of their constituents. Respecting residents’ personal information will help to achieve this.” Said David Smith, Deputy Commissioner
